Strike Press Release, May 20th

Strike Press Release, May 20th - 2013

NEWS: Strike Magazine is ecstatic to announce that it will be returning this September, with some changes. Strike Magazine will be printing a monthly newspaper publication.
The quality and magic behind Strike will now be available on a monthly basis, on a schedule. Partnering with local businesses, Strike will be available at dozens of local hotspots, and of course, it will be free!

Needless to say, Strike has had to expand operations to manage a monthly publication. So, if you are a writer who is interested in submitting to be published in Strike, please refer to this application.

In 2012, Strike was praised for becoming a high quality publication entirely under students. In 2013, Strike will continue to offer the same content and quality, every month.

Over this summer, Strike will be announcing our business partners where Strike distribution will be available. As of this update, we will also be accepting new staff applications and content submissions.

We are thrilled to be returning on a more regular basis, and we hope our readers are as excited as we are.

Strike is back!

A Letter To Our Readers - Strike In 2013

To the readers of Strike Magazine,

First and foremost, let me personally thank you. Strike was a massive success in 2012. We published our fall and winter forty page publications, launched a beautiful new website with Foglight Studios, (If you haven't seen it yet, check it out here!!) significantly grew our staff, and our readership and following in the community massively increased. None of that could have happened without awesome readers like you.

So what's in store for Strike Magazine in 2013? I thought I would outline these in a series of segments instead of a large body of text, as follows:

Strike Print

After lots of mulling it over and discussions, Strike has decided to cease the quarterly print publication cycle in 2013. Now, this doesn't mean Strike will not print in 2013, but we are exploring new avenues of print, possibly a yearly publication? Stay tuned!

Online

Ceasing the quarterly print cycle, Strike will be refocusing efforts to our beautiful new home on the internet. We plan to be releasing articles just like this on a near-daily basis going into the new year! All the same content, just online!

New Staff

As always, new staff and new contributors are always welcome at Strike in 2013. The process to become involved has been significantly streamlined this year, simply head on over to this page on the Foglight website to read the guidelines and apply!

Strike's parent company, Foglight Studios, is also taking new staff. You can apply on the same page linked above. Foglight is an even larger effort and activity devoted to film and music!

Community Involvement

Strike will also be allocating quite a bit of time and resources going into 2013 in aiding our local community. Our first community project will launch within the next month, please stay tuned for how to be involved! (Once again, the best way to get involved is join a division of Foglight, again, see this page.)

With that said, thank you for your support in 2012! Please stay tuned to Strike in 2013, and spread the word! If you love an article or Strike in general, share our pages online, share articles, comment on them, get involved! If you read a short story that intrigues you, let us know! If you read a review you disagree with, let us know too! All it takes to comment here on the website is a Google account!

Strike will continue to serve you through more avenues than ever going into 2013. We look forward to another amazing year!

Best Regards,

Brett Stewart, Editor & Publisher

Announcement: Strike Online 2.0 To Be Released on Dec. 22

It's like AOL 2.0, but absolutely nothing like it either.
In fact, Strike 2.0 is freaking awesome.
And it's not a fire hazard.

Shortly following it's Winter 2012 release this Thursday, Strike Magazine will be re-launching StrikeMagazine.net in an entirely new format on December 22nd. The massive change has been designed to create a hub for all Strike content that is easily accessible and high quality. Strike Online 2.0 will also highlight some of the largest changes (TBA) that Strike Magazine will have going into 2013.

The new Strike Online is also built with community in mind. Strike will be accepting more writers, and there will be many social networking options to be involved with the publication on the website.

The change has been in the works for three months now, and the release is highly anticipated. Strike has quadrupled its server sizes and plans to host a vast amount of content going into 2013 with their association with Foglight Studios. (Details later this week)

So with that said, enjoy our temporary website, and on December 2nd Strike 2.0 will be active!

Katie Ledecky and the Future for USA Swimming

by Brian Heissenbuttel

In the London Olympics, several young and promising athletes made their debut. The most famous among these new athletes is Colorado native Missy Franklin, who won four gold medals and set a new world record in the women’s 200 backstroke. However, another young swimmer from the United States who is also young and extremely talented.
Her name is Katie Ledecky. She is 15 years old and a Maryland native. Ledecky’s specialty is distance swimming. Her only event in the 2012 Olympics was the 800-meter freestyle, where she embarrassed the field, beating the silver-medal winner Mireia Belmonte Garcia by 4.1 seconds. She also beat Great Britain’s Rebecca Adlington by 6 seconds, who set a world record in Beijing in 2008. Ledecky was 0.53 seconds away from breaking this record.
The one record she did break was the American record, set by Janet Evans eight years before Ledecky was born.
With Ledecky being so young, I have no doubt she will break Adlington’s record in Rio de Janeiro and may break her own record in the 2020 Olympics.
Between Franklin, Ledecky, and all the other young swimmers that will debut in the 2016 Olympics, the United States swim team has a very bright future.

Women's Badminton Players Disqualified for Intentionally Losing Games

by Brian Heissenbuttel

Every Olympic athlete’s dream is to take home the gold. Most athletes will do anything win the competition. We cheer them on as they train by weight lifting, distance running, and practice on the field or court for hundreds of hours every month. But eight female badminton players from South Korea, China, and Indonesia have resorted to intentionally losing matches to gain better positions in the elimination rounds.
China’s Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, South Korea’s Jung Kyun-eun, Kim Ha-na, Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung, and Indonesia’s Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii were all disqualified from the London Games for fixing matches.
When the footage is analyzed, it is obvious that both teams are trying to lose in both games. The serves are shot directly into the net, and the ones that barely make it over are hit straight down. I am driven to believe that is the first time everyone in a badminton stadium has booed all the players.
This occurrence has positioned several teams, including Canada, in the elimination round with a chance to take home medals.

There are mixed opinions about whether or not the teams should be disqualified, so here are the links to the highlights. Decide for yourselves.
